FAQS
Taiko Drum FAQs
A. Taiko drums are sensitive to humidity and should be stored in a dry place. It is recommended to lay them horizontally or use a wooden grid or board to keep the drumhead off the ground when placed face down. High humidity can accelerate the aging of the drumhead.
A. JINLEI’s new Taiko drums are usually tuned to a high pitch. If you have specific sound preferences, please inform us when placing your order. We offer “Kanbari” (high pitch), “Cyubari” (medium pitch), and “Donbari” (low pitch). Please note that “Donbari” tuning may result in lower pitches over time.
A. Katsugi Daiko is made from lightweight paulownia wood, with thinner drumheads, and requires a specific drumstick (Katsugi Bachi). Okedou Daiko, on the other hand, uses heavier paulownia wood and thicker drumheads, similar to Nagadou Daiko, and can be played with Wadaiko Bachi. While their appearances are similar, they serve different purposes and playing techniques
A. Yes. The pitch and volume can be adjusted by tightening or loosening the ropes or bolts on the drum.
A. If the drumhead surface becomes rough, use fine sandpaper (180–200 grit) to smooth it gently in circular motions. Then, wipe it with a damp cloth and let it air dry in a well-ventilated area. Regularly smoothing the tips of your drumsticks can also reduce wear on the drumhead.
A. Applying a small amount of leather-specific wax is acceptable, but avoid using other substances such as egg whites or alcohol, as these may accelerate the aging of the drumhead.
A. Replacement frequency depends on usage and storage conditions. Replace the drumhead if it becomes damaged, loose, or if the sound quality deteriorates.
A. For temporary repairs, apply multiple layers of tape over the damaged area. However, it’s recommended to replace the drumhead promptly to prevent uneven tension that may deform the drum body.
A. Keep the drum out of direct sunlight, manage humidity levels, and store it in a dry place. Regularly check the drumhead and body for any issues to prolong its lifespan.
